SACRAMENTO, CA — California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) launched “Big Oil is Slick. Don’t Slip, California,” a major campaign launching today on billboards, in digital spaces, and through guerilla marketing. The campaign blankets Sacramento’s streets, sidewalks, and screens to call out the fossil fuel industry’s deception and urge lawmakers to stand up to the slick influence of the oil and gas industry.
“We wanted to remind lawmakers – and Californians – that the oil industry is continuing to profit off of Californians’ suffering,” says Mary Creasman, EnviroVoters’ CEO. “Their products are bad for our health and responsible for costly climate crises like the wildfires we just saw in Los Angeles. Now they’re trying to use slick PR campaigns and lobbyists to block Californians from the cheaper, healthier, clean energy future they want.”
The campaign greets lawmakers as they arrive back to the capital after their summer recess with a variety of eye-catching tactics including digital billboards, sidewalk decals, large and small format flyers, and more.
“We even had coffee cup sleeves printed with our message to try and get it in front of as many people as possible, wherever they go,” says Creasman. The coffee cup sleeves have the message “This is the only dark liquid that belongs in Sacramento” printed on them, along with the “Don’t Slip” message to lawmakers. “We want lawmakers to respond to what voters are asking for: real solutions to the affordability crisis they’re facing and accountability for the companies that caused it–not more bailouts and handouts to the most profitable industry the world has ever known.”
Recent polling shows that 78% of voters support California investing in clean energy to lower costs for consumers and that companies who are found to be polluting the air (85%), and oil and gas companies (77%) should be most responsible for paying more to address wildfires and repair damage.
Meanwhile, lobbying disclosures revealed that the Western States Petroleum Association spent $18 million in the first half of 2025 alone attempting to influence California lawmakers.
“As we approach the end of the legislative session, we need lawmakers to stand firm in the face of Big Oil’s influence and stay committed to California’s climate agenda,” says Creasman. “We need a worker-led transition for communities that may be impacted by proposed refinery closures, investments in clean transportation solutions so we can continue to lessen our oil dependency, and policies that require polluters to pay for the affordability crisis they have caused.”
All campaign materials point toward DontSlipCA.org, a new landing page on the EnviroVoters website where visitors can learn more about the organization’s priorities and take action.
